	It doesn't require a kernel recompile.

	It does however require that the NICs aren't conflicting with
anything else in the machine and aren't conflicting with themselves.

	The orignal poster needs to check their configuration.  I've had lots
of problems with 3Com cards and their PnP (the true Plug and Pray)
setup...
