I think the problem might be that you updated your source and built a kernel without updating the rest of the userland. Try booting to your old kernel (kernel.old if you haven't deleted it). Then with your old kernel do a make clean, make buildworld (to see if it actually builds), drop to single user, make installworld, mergemaster, then build a new kernel and reboot. This is the process I usually use when I update and it's been smooth so far. In theory this should work. Although I could be incredible wrong about this, and if I am I would appreciate it if someone would point it out since it's usually the only way I learn something new.
