Adding Option "Log" "sync" to your ServerLayout section may help it to 
leave a log before locking.

FWIW, my X1650 PCIe works okay in an 8-stable system. 
WITHOUT_NOUVEAU=yes is set in /etc/make.conf, although I don't know 
whether that applies to the new xorg.
