The benchmarking util that JeremyZ originally wrote was written in Perl.
Maybe you were thinking of that.

Why would you assume Linux is near the peak of it's performance curve?

Nobody that I have seen so far, including myself, has even tried to tweak
Linux or MySQL on Linux beyond and out-of-the-box installation to get
results that far exceed the performance of FreeBSD. So to the contrary,
it is more likely to be the Linux results that are near the middle or lower 
end,
and FreeBSD's which we are hitting peak performance (trying -CURRENT
with every tweak and variation available).
