Hello to all "satanic" fellows :-) I am considering to set up an X-terminal server running FreeBSD, with four Pentium III Xeon processors and 512MB-1GB RAM. This machine should service about 40 simultaneous X-users (running Netscape, Wordperfect, editors, LaTeX... mainly interactive use). I know that FreeBSD's SMP support is limited by the fact that the kernel is a big critical section, but in any case I would love to hear any experiences from people using similar configurations in a "many X-users" environment. With respect to the server, I like the Dell PowerEdge 6300. Does FreeBSD run trouble-free on this machine? Does anybody know? Of course, I am open to any suggestions :-) TIA, -- JMA ----------------------------------------------------------------------- José Mª Alcaide | mailto:jose@we.lc.ehu.es Universidad del País Vasco | mailto:jmas@FreeBSD.ORG Dpto. de Electricidad y Electrónica | http://www.we.lc.ehu.es/~jose Facultad de Ciencias - Campus de Lejona | Tel.: +34-946012479 48940 Lejona (Vizcaya) - SPAIN | Fax: +34-946013071 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "Keyboard not present -- Press F1 to resume" To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message
