Knowledge of how sh treats variables is assumed for any unix admin. The level of escaping might be cryptic to some, but using sh -x /etc/rc./netif start <ifname> one can easily trace how the ifconfig_<ifname> variable is evaluated and where the backslashes are consumed. -- Mel
