Does "ps" say that nmbd is running?
What are the contents of /var/log/log.nmb?

Installing a tarball isn't the same as configuring the program however.

Samba logs a lot of useful info in /var/log/smb.log and /var/log/nmb.log,
these are where we start the troubleshooting.  Let us know what is being
logged there, and we can probably figure out what is wrong.
