I had the same problems with kde2.2, i removed my
soundcard,and everything worked. I do not know if you
use a sound card but the problem in my case was either
artsd or my soundcard driver.
(Ensoniq) i installed a "normal" pci 128 soundblaster
and everything works fine know.
