If so, how do I work around this? This is discussed here fairly regularly. You are running 5.3-release, so pkg_add -r looks for 5.3-release packages. You can either point pkg_add at another master site that still carries them (see the manpage), or try to use the 5.4-stable packages, which are not supported on 5.3.
