I think the cheapest card I've seen with optical I/O was around $400 (Zefiro ZA2). Cards with coax SPDIF I/O (such as the Live!) can be had for a lot less. The SBLive! has a digital I/O daughterboard that has coax SPDIF, among other things. However, there is another (cheaper) version called "SBLive! Value" that does not include the digital daughterboard.
