IMHO, this is expected behaviour. You upstream router (172.24.17.1) is not aware that you're using a separate FIB. As defined in RFC792: The gateway sends a redirect message to a host ... the host identified by t= he internet source address of the datagram are on the same network, a redirect message is sent to the host. Therefore, your host receives an ICMP redirect message indicating that your host is on the same link as the router. FreeBSD will create a dynamic route with an expiration time in its routing table (FIB 1 in your case) and direc= tly forward traffic as expected. As you have already found out, you can avoid this scenario by setting icmp_drop_redirect=3D"YES".
