I just updated my laptop today from a pre-3.1 world and it still screwed up the contrib/gcc bits so I don't think this fixes the problem. IMO it's not worth pursuing it further. Just add an entry to updating that if you are updating to gcc 3.1 and you have problems compiling you should blow away contrib/gcc and check it out again.
