Though you :may need to keep reminding them. No, you do not need an SSN to get a driver's license. Any state that attempts to make it a requirement is in violation of Federal law. Anyone who asks for your SSN for any reason other than to be able to report tax info to the IRS is in violation of Federal law. My SSN happens to be my VA Driver's License number, I could have just as easily told the state to go blow, issue me a new unique number.
