This is a 'good thing', since it keeps folks from buying an Earthlink
account for one month and sending out SPAM.

(This is almost certainly the reason it was shutdown.)

As someone else pointed out, you can set things up on a separate port
number or use some sort of SSH port forwarding.  This minimizes the SPAM
risk, since the only way to get to your server is via the 'non-standard'
port or after the host has been authenticated.

(The latter is probably easier to do out of the box, and in fact is
trivial to setup, even on M$ boxes...)
