Just another user here, but that looks like a bug in the MAKEDEV (/dev/MAKEDEV after installation), if /dev/X actually has an "X". What are you installing from? If not from a -RELEASE version, you might have gotten a snapshot of the software with a bug in it which will no-doubt go away soon. Try again later after re-downloading. If ambitious, you could look for the /usr/src/etc/MAKEDEV file in the cvs system (www access at www.freebsd.org) and see if it has a stray "X" in it or if it has been fixed.
