The drive reads ATIP info from the disk to determine the maximum writable=20
speed (Among other useful things)

Of course the media could be lying about the maximum speed it's rated for, =
but=20
I haven't seen media like that. I buy Verbatim 48x spindles of 50 disks whi=
ch=20
are fairly cheap but don't produce coasters.

CD-RW media is slower but that's a function of the way CD-RW's are made and=
=20
their smaller volume.
