I haven't looked into the Evolution part, but this looks like perfectly
normal behaviour. gdesklets 0.26.* and older does not have any visible
feedback after starting, before you manually add first display.

You may want to upgrade to gdesklets 0.31 which were added to ports
yesterday, they add an icon to your panel's notification area after
startup.
