Have you looked at "http://www.redhat.com/software/database/"? Here's what you'll find: Red Hat Database $2295.00 The Open Source Database for Red Hat Linux 7.1 Powered by PostgreSQL 7.1. Look carefully. It's open source. They admit it. And they charge $2295. One of their selling points is that you can use it on multiple systems. They actually advertise that "that" means lower cost of ownership. I'm certainly not going to even attempt to justify what they do; obviously they've figured out a way to sell to corporate America while still supporting what they see in open source. Those of us who are smart enough to download the pieces and configure them together can certainly get the package free. Some replies to this thread have pointed out that you can find everything in Red Hat Linux Professional for a free download. That's not quite true; Red Hat Linux Professional 7.2 includes some packages that are NOT free or open source. For example, Red Hat Linux Professional 7.2 includes a complete Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader). That's the main reason we bought it. We're going to have a linux desktop devoted to creating .pdf files. As I've always said, I'm a tool-user. That's a good tool at a good price, for me, anyway. But just as true, you can download the two ISOs. In general server and desktop installations those are the only CD-ROMs you'll ever need. And it is open source, and it IS going to stay that way. Unless AOL buys them . What? You haven't read the rumors? Anything more that neds to be said can and should be said on freebsd-chat. Jeff -- Jeff Lasman nobaloney.net P. O.
