Why? Well, Maxim Sobolev and others have done one hell of a job getting Gnome 1.4.1 fully operational on FreeBSD. With the latest Gnome, you get working Nautilus, Evolution, and gdm. These programs we not very functional in the 4.4-RELEASE time frame.
