If the command: ping `hostname` Works (the back-ticks are important), then GNOME should work without the /etc/hosts entry. However, if that command doesn't work, you need to either modify your hostname (so that the output of the hostname command returns what you expect), or add a _correct_ entry to /etc/hosts. for example: 127.0.0.1 localhost 7rx.dyndns.org Joe >=20 > On Wed, 20 Oct 2004 21:12:14 -0400, Joe Marcus Clarke > wrote: > > On Wed, 2004-10-20 at 21:08, Gert Cuykens wrote: > > > i put > > > > > > exec gnome-session > > > > > > in a file i created my self calt > > > > > > ~/.xsession > >=20 > > This should be ~/.xinitrc if using startx. ~/.xsession is from xdm. > >=20 > > > > > > but when i do startx gnome does not start > > > when i do gnome-session in a xterm gnome does start but gives this wa= rning > > > > > > Could not look up internet address for . > > > This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. > > > It may be possible to correct the problem by adding > > > to the file /etc/hosts. > >=20 > > See http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q20.
