I've only seen them with things like Word Star, early versions of Word Perfect, and Sprint. Control information should be visible and intelligible. TeX codes are visible but not intelligible. SGML codes are visible and, once you've learnt 5 layers of abstractions, intelligible. Personally I prefer [gt]roff, which falls somewhere in between.
