Hello,

my problem is this:

It seems to be impossible to write CDs (e.g. using
cdrecord on drives connected via the ATAPI (= IDE ?)
bus using FreeBSD.

Reading works, and under Linux or NetBSD there are workarounds to
write also (looks like emulation of SCSI).

Is there a way to Patch FreeBSD to get the NetBSD behaviour?

Any other recommendation?

Axel

***************** Here the details of my case: *************

I got

 Cdrecord release 1.6.1 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 J,Av(Brg Schilling

running under

 axel# uname -a
 FreeBSD axel.scphys.kyoto-u.ac.jp 2.2.8-RELEASE FreeBSD 2.2.8-RELEASE #0:
 Mon Nov 30 06:34:08 GMT 1998
 jkh@time.cdrom.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386

and can mount and read from my

 Philips CDD3610

as

 /dev/wcd1a

or

 /dev/wcd1c

(there is another read-only drive at /dev/wcd0[ac])

There don't seem to be any *.ctl devices for ATAPI CD-drives.
All I get is something like

axel# cdrecord/OBJ/i386-freebsd-cc/cdrecord -vvVV -eject dev=/dev/wcd1c:@
Cdrecord release 1.6.1 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 J,Av(Brg Schilling
TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM
scsidev: '/dev/wcd1c:@'
devname: '/dev/wcd1c'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
cdrecord/OBJ/i386-freebsd-cc/cdrecord: Invalid argument. Cannot open SCSI driver.
