How about small partition on disk just to boot kernel which gets replicated to another disk at startup via dump/restore and the rest is via vinum. Bios can be set to boot from second disk if first failed (as moderen Bioses allow) and since kernel can be read from any device and /etc/fstab would contain only vinum devices it should work. Right? Then we just need some major beeping, mailing, etc to notify admins about failed disk.
