When you are running 2.2.5 or later, the rc.conf file has a sample entry that looks like this: #ifconfig_lo0_alias0="inet 127.0.0.254 netmask 0xffffffff" # Sample alias entry. so it is documented, just not in 2.2.2 which is what you are running.
