Check out live365.com. They offer a free service that will do just what you want. They will relay a live stream for you for up to 100 client connections using shoutcast (streaming mp3). They will also give you 365MB of space on a server to store .mp3 files for broadcast by their servers. (Their main servers are Solaris, but I thought I read somewhere that they also use FreeBSD on some systems). You can use the shoutcast server or icecast server (open source shoutcast compatible server) on FreeBSD. Or you can use a prog that comes with the icecast package called shout to broadcast files on disk instead of requiring WinAMP or another mp3 player to stream to the shoutcast/icecast server. I've used both the shoutcast and icecast servers as well as shout on FreeBSD 3.2 and 3.3 with good success. Shoutcast streams can be played by WinAmp, Sonique, RealPlayerG2 and Windows Media Player on Windows, xmms on *nix, and Audion and others on Macintosh. They generally sound much better than RealAudio streams. All the software you need to start broadcasting from either pre-recorded or live audio sources is available for free.
