That way you'd only have to build things once, and could still install everything by installing the package of the meta-port. Come to think of it, the only reason I knew what Charles meant by meta-port is because I've run into the concept and had it explained. This is a port that has few or no files of it's own, but depends on a bunch of other ports. That way, installing the meta-port installs all the dependencies.
