I'm not sure what exactly you want to do, but the method I use for
getting a serial console is to make a file called /boot.config
containing -P. This will switch the loader and kernel etc to the serial
console if no keyboard is plugged in, or the video/keyboard console if a
keyboard is plugged in.

You need to change the ttyd0 entry to 'on' in /etc/ttys to allow logins
over serial.
