One must interpret AML in order to do it right, which is likely the hardest part. There has been some work done to read values from ACPI, but the battery charge and the rate of discharge are not "static" information and are unavailable, at least on the VAIO, without running a small AML script. There is a pointer from the MS site to the acpi stuff, but I don't recall off the top of my head where it is...
