Thanks for all the help.  I've added the -X option to tar and have a
file containing all directories and files I don't wish to backup.=20

You should probably step back and tell us:
1.  What you are trying to accomplish.
2.  What hardware you have (both machines).
3.  What software you are running (uname -a).

You should probably at least reread the Handbook on devices, device
naming, backups (in particular dump and restore).
