I installed the source for XFree86-4.2.0 and it works fine. My hardware is a bit on the old side now though, if that matters. One other point about my install - I also did a new, clean install of FreeBSD 4.5 and did not install X at that time. So, be sure to follow the directions if you already have X installed. 
One more point, now that it is installed, it is only useable by root. I haven't got that straightened out yet.
