I'm running FreeBSD 4.8 but the problem is in the console as well as X.
The mouse is a PS/2 Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical.

The machine has been running overnight now, and the problem persists. The 
machine is currently running no ressource demanding services, so load ought to 
be pretty low.
