Not exactly multimedia, but related -- scientific visualization. Some probably already know, but IBM Data Explorer is going open source. FWIW, this is a commercial SciVis visual programming environment (VPE) with licenses costing thousands of $. http://www.almaden.ibm.com/dx Now what we need is 3D hardware acceleration. Come on XFree 4.0. ;-) Randall --- Forwarded mail from hertjwr@us.ibm.com From: hertjwr@us.ibm.com Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 15:46:53 -0400 Subject: DX News Hi -- Many of you may already know about this, but since the notice is now officially on the web, I just wanted to make sure you heard sooner rather than later. As noted below, DX is being withdrawn from marketing, and is to be offered as open source. A lot more details will be distributed in the coming weeks about arrangements for getting copies, getting the source etc. As you can imagine, going open source is a somewhat new process, so getting the legalities worked out took the organization a while (other people did this, I have just been an observer.) Overall though, I think this is great news for people building applications on top of DX. -- Holly ________________________________________________________________ >From "IBM US Announcement Letters" Software Withdrawal and Service Discontinuance: IBM Visualization Data Explorer Version 3.1 and SMP Version 3.1 Overview Effective August 27, 1999, IBM will withdraw from marketing the following programs licensed under the IBM Customer Agreement.
