Not exactly multimedia, but related -- scientific visualization.
Some probably already know, but IBM Data Explorer is going open source.
FWIW, this is a commercial SciVis visual programming environment (VPE) with
licenses costing thousands of $.

Hi --
Many of you may already know about this, but since the notice is now officially
on the web, I just wanted to make sure you heard sooner rather
than later. As noted below, DX is being withdrawn from marketing, and is to be
offered as open source. A lot more details will be distributed in the coming
weeks about arrangements for getting copies, getting the source etc. As you can
imagine, going open source is a somewhat new process, so getting the legalities
worked out took the organization a while (other people did this, I have just
been an observer.) Overall though, I think this is great news for people
building applications on top of DX.
