The GUI screen was still black. The Xorg Project seems to concentrate as much on reducing portability and breaking existing functionality as on fixing bugs and improving functionality. You have fallen into one of their traps: By default, the Xserver now starts with a black screen to ensure you can't tell if it's actually working or not. (In order to make this even less clear, Ctrl-Alt-BS has also been disabled by default). >And only a small square box appeared on the screen. >This square box moved responding to mouse movement. That sounds promising - it sounds like the Xserver is running, you have a mouse cursor (though maybe without the correct font) and mouse input is working. Are any errors reported when you stop X? Have you tried reverting to the default xinitrc (starting twm and a couple of xterms)? This will help distinguish between a problem with Xorg and a problem with KDE.
