At the risk of detracting from the matter at hand, this would be a useful extension to getopt(3), as would the ability to have numeric-only options (a' la "tail -123"), that is not just single digits, but whole numbers. I'm not going to write it, I'm not going argue about it, and I'm not going to say any more about it, so if this is utterly ridiculous, then ignore me and this branch of the thread will die :-).
