[ccd tale of woe snipped]

Well, I got it all to work, finally, by being extremely
careful (i.e. picky) with fdisk and disklabel on the disk, and
also on the ccd, when that had been configured.

The kernel panics seem to have been caused by severely
hosed disklabels.
