I tried the pcm driver and the snd0 collection. The snd0 lot look more promising (pcm says "hope it's a sb0"). I've compiled the drivers into the kernel and done sh MAKEDEV snd0 but still no sound (judging by the kmedia application in kde). dmesg and sndstat are given below. Thanks for any help, Lawrence.
