Long story short - my pkg db lost all its information on XF86, kde, and gnome, and who knows what else. So I moved the old /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X11R6 and started over. So far I reinstalled XFree86-4 and KDE and pkg db looks good for them. But when I try to start X using startx, I get the following in /var/log/XFree86.0.log at the end of the log - note the failed write attempt to the mouse device: (**) Option "Protocol" "PS/2" (**) Mouse1: Protocol: "PS/2" (**) Option "CorePointer" (**) Mouse1: Core Pointer (**) Option "Device" "/dev/psm0" (**) Option "Emulate3Buttons" (**) Mouse1: Emulate3Buttons, Emulate3Timeout: 50 (==) Mouse1: Buttons: 3 (II) Keyboard "Keyboard1" handled by legacy driver (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE) (EE) Mouse1: Write to mouse failed (WW) fcntl(6, F_SETOWN): Inappropriate ioctl for device /dev/psm0 exists: $ ls -al /dev/psm0 crw-rw---- 1 root wheel 21, 1 Feb 11 07:42 /dev/psm0 and it shows up in dmesg output: $ dmesg |grep psm psm0: irq 12 on atkbdc0 psm0: model Generic PS/2 mouse, device ID 0 The XFree86 config file I'm using is the same one I used before this mess up and it worked great. The only big different I know of is this time I installed the "Wrapper for XFree86-4 server". But I don't think this is it.
