Mike, thank you very much for your patience. Your question about the hardwa=
re suddenly made me remember that both these boxes had problems with the Re=
altek driver from base.

One of the boxes has a=C2=A0Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE NIC on the motherboard whic=
h doesn't work with the re driver from base at all. The card is seen in dme=
sg, but it does not show up with ifconfig and cannot get an IP assigned.

The other box has a=C2=A0Realtek PCIe GbE 1Gbit NIC on the motherboard whic=
h works with the driver re from base, however not without bugs, this bug pa=
rticulary=C2=A0https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D166724

So in both cases I switched to the=C2=A0realtek-re-kmod driver from package=
s.

I have just tried with an Intel card in one of the boxes and the problem is=
 gone.

I suspect there is a problem with the=C2=A0realtek-re-kmod driver.

Thanks all for your help!
