This is another one of those situations where someone has what seems to be a good idea and rushes it into the tree. Soon afterward, problems with the idea become evident. But instead of undoing the damage, we press on, wrapping ourselves tighter and tighter in the mess. Can't we just acknowledge that trying to get rid of libgmp wasn't such a hot idea for the here and now and revert that change? Ciao, Sheldon.
