I realise my original post was rather scanty on detail, but I was just wondering about the specific combination of vinum/softupdates. Since you indicate that this combination should not be a problem in itself, I will need to dig deeper. Unfortunately I have only heard about the problems on these servers after the fact. I will need to rebuild their kernels with debugging, etc, as I did on my own box previously, and then wait for another crash and see what gdbmods reveals.
