Note that you need to _add_ $HOME/lib to $LD_LIBRARY_PATH (and check that it's expanded correctly). Do you have access to the ports tree (reading)? Then you could simply redefine $WRKDIRPREFIX to where you can compile, and $PREFIX to where you can install to.
