Mac,

I was having the same problem and I saw your listing
from a while ago.  If you haven't solved your problem,
here is the solution I came up with that worked.

1.  Turn the plug-and-play ON for the 3c509 using 3c5x9cfg.exe.
    It seems that 4.1 is trying to read the PnP eeprom to configure
    the card, so let it do it.

2.  Release the interupt that was reserved for the ISA
    card in PnP management in the motherboard bios.

After I did this everything was better.
