I tried again this morning loading the snd_emu10k1 module manually after booting and the machine hung as before. I heard the usual brief crack/pop out of the sound card as if it had loaded, but then it does not return to prompt or respond to SSH/any keyboard input anymore. I let it sit a bit longer this time, over 15 minutes...would not recover. After the hard reboot and fsck, I compiled "device sound" and "device snd_emu10k1" into my kernel which is working fine now. So it's only a problem when loading the module. I can open a PR if needed, but I don't really have any data or debugging info (no errors on the screen, or in /var/log/messages). I only know that after the system was up since the last rebuild and I rebooted it yesterday, the system hangs indefinitely upon loading the snd_emu10k1 module even though I had not changed any system configuration in that time. I did have a new world/kernel built before yesterday's reboot, but not installed.
