I was sure I ran mergemaster after the upgrade to 4.0 and thus that MAKEDEV was up-to-date. It was not. Now I'm not so sure I ran mergemaster.... I looked at the major/minor of those node files and sure enough they were not good. I had some glitches during the install process and it's quite possible I overlooked this importnat step... oh well, thanks for the shove in the right direction 8-) Problem solved.
