FreeBSD already uses Illumos CDDL-licensed code via zfs and perhaps experience with the zfs port would help with reusing Illumos code. I don't know if starting with the Illumos SMB CDDL-licensed code fits with the objectives of the FreeBSD project. Obviously, it would be a lot of work.
