Some months ago there were many questions about that, you
could search the mailing-list archive.
It is not really harmful, but the messages will go on one's
nerves.
As far as I remember one can reduce modem speed a little in
/etc/ppp/ppp.conf .

I never saw these messages again, after I changed to a
DSL-modem.
