We've moved from GCC 4.8 to 4.9 to 5 to 6 in less than 12 months now, catching up quite a bit, and GCC 6 will be maintained upstream for another year, but indeed GCC 7 is the latest stable release and some Linux distros, for example, have adopted it already.
