On the Sprint CDMA network, you can run digital to a modem somewhere in the bowels of Sprint, and then at 14.4kbs to any other modem. I've got a serial data cable that makes my Motorola StarTac look like a 14.4 modem to my laptop, complete with AT/DT command set.
