Personally, this is why /tmp should be mfs:
tmpmfs="YES"            # Set to YES to always create an mfs /tmp, NO to never
tmpsize="500m"          # Size of mfs /tmp if created

I've run with mfs /tmp for a very long time..  I'm surprised we don't
enable this by default...  even MacOSX does it (though /tmp isn't normally
available to the user through Finder)...
