I've found that's the best way to learn and even more important, to remember, to have something go wrong and finally fix it. :-) I did try to follow the new kernel build instructions but still ran into the same problem. I submitted another message with the subject of /usr/src/UPDATING. It's strange, the "installkernel" part moves the existing kernel to kernel.old and installs the new kernel as "/kernel". There is no place for me to continue follow the instructions for building the new kernel. Thanks for all the information and suggestions so far.
